“Faster, faster, faster until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death”

Hunter Thompson

Khai Mikael Van Weelden, a Form 2 student of our prestigious educational institution, Kolej Yayasan Saad, participated in the 6th round of the Kart Racing & Development International League Championship. Prior to this round, Khai was placed 3rd in the League Championship. This round was held at the renowned City Karting Go Kart in Shah Alam. He was taking part in the 80cc Senior Category and was opposing 15 other adversaries who were all competing in the League Championship.

The race started off with the qualifying rounds where all racers had to drive for ten minutes around the track individually and have their timing recorded. All racers gave it their all as only six of the swiftest racers would compete in the final. Fortunately, Khai finished 3rd in qualifying and broke his very own personal record. However, Khai was hungry for more and the thought of stopping at such a minuscule achievement was not an option

Unbeknownst to him, the heat round which consisted of 8 laps and held the purpose of determining the starting place for the final would be his biggest challenge yet. Once the sound of the starting gun went off, each racer went into full gear to get that game-changing starting place. To Khai’s misfortune, he got off to a horrific start and dropped to 6th place. This was due to his kart’s faulty steering wheel which prevented him from steering to the left. This left a detrimental effect on Khai’s ranking as he got pushed off the asphalt.

Then came the ever-awaited grand finals of 12 laps and Khai was starting in the last place. Even when things looked grim for Khai, he knew his final duty in the race and walked up to the track with nerves of steel. Once the time bestowed upon him, he sped off as fast as the speed of light. One by one, beating racer by racer, he gained momentum and moved up to 3rd place by the end of the 6th lap. He maintained that placing for the rest of the race.

After a tense and ferocious race put up by the talented racers, it then came the time for the judges to evaluate the marks of the finalists in the qualifying and final round. The final accumulated result came in and Khai was crowned as the overall best racer of the 6th round of the Kart Racing & Development International League Championship. This tightened the gap between Khai and the championship leader to only 23 points with only 4 rounds to go in the 2019/2020 season. We wish Khai Mikael all the best for his next race on 1st October 2019 in the Sodi World Series in Langkawi.
